KaratSync: Live Gold Prices
What does KaratSync actually do?
It recalculates your product prices from the live gold or silver rate and writes the new prices into Shopify. You set the formula once — metal, purity, wastage, making charge, margin, tax, rounding — and every product carrying that tag reprices itself on a schedule.
Which metals and purities are supported?
Gold at 24K, 22K, 18K and 14K, and silver at 999, 925, 900 and 800. Platinum is not enabled yet.
Where do the rates come from?
metals.dev, which aggregates published spot rates. KaratSync shows the exact rate, the source and the timestamp behind every calculation, so you can always see what a price was built from.
Where do I set a product’s weight, and which weight is it?
Open Products in the app, click the product and fill in Weight (grams). It is stored on the product itself, so setting it once is enough.
It must be the weight of the metal, not the weight of the finished piece. The live rate is multiplied directly by this number, so it should exclude stones, beads, enamel, clasps in another metal, and packaging. A 12g ring holding a 2g diamond has a metal weight of 10g. Enter 12g and every customer is charged for two grams of gold that aren’t there.
Put the value of the stones in the separate Stone value field instead. It is added to the price as a flat amount and is never multiplied by the metal rate, which is correct — a diamond’s price does not move when gold moves.
Leave the weight blank and KaratSync skips the product entirely rather than guessing.
What is the formula?
In order:
- Metal value = metal weight × today’s rate for that metal, adjusted for purity (22K counts as 91.6% of the 24K rate, 925 silver as 92.5% of pure)
- + Wastage — a percentage of the metal value
- + Making charge — a fixed amount, an amount per gram, or a percentage of the metal value, whichever you choose
- + Stone value — the flat amount set on the product
- + Margin — a fixed amount, or a percentage of everything above
- + Tax — a percentage of that subtotal
- Rounded to your chosen increment, then raised to the product’s minimum price if one is set and the rounded price came in under it
Everything except the rate and the two per-product fields comes from the formula you build, so the same rules apply consistently across every product it targets.
Where can I see the breakdown for a single product?
In Preview and apply. Every affected variant gets a row showing its current price and its new price, and the info control on that row expands into the full working — the rate used, metal value, wastage, making charge, stone value, margin, tax, the rounded figure, and whether the minimum price took effect.
After a run, History keeps the same detail per product: old price, new price, outcome and reason for every variant the run touched.
Will it change a price without me seeing it first?
Only if you tell it to. Preview shows every affected variant with its old price, its new price and the full working before anything is written. Scheduled runs use the same formula you approved in Preview.
What if a rate is wrong or the feed goes strange?
KaratSync refuses to write. A run is blocked if the rate is stale, if it has jumped sharply without a second source corroborating it, or if the currency configured in the app does not match your store’s real currency. Repricing a whole catalogue from a bad number is the one mistake that is expensive to undo, so those guards sit in front of every write.
Can I undo an update?
Yes. Every run is recorded in History with a Roll back button. It restores each price to exactly what it was before that run.
Does it touch products I don’t want repriced?
No. A formula only applies to products carrying the tag you point it at, and only when that product has the weight and purity fields filled in. Everything else is left alone.
Can I stop a product going below a certain price?
Yes. Set a minimum price on the product itself. It is an amount, not a percentage, and leaving it blank means no floor.
How does the storefront badge work?
It is a theme app block, so you add it from the theme editor with no code. It shows the live rate and the time of the last sync on your product pages. It renders nothing before your first successful price run, and hides itself once the last sync gets too old — it will never state a rate that is no longer current.
What are the plans?
Free covers 5 products with a daily update. Core is $15/month or $150/year and covers 50 products with a daily update. Pro is $40/month or $400/year, covers unlimited products and updates hourly. Core and Pro both start with a 7-day free trial.
What happens to my prices if I cancel?
Nothing. Your prices stay exactly where they are. KaratSync simply stops updating them.
What data does KaratSync store?
Your store domain and access token, your app settings and formulas, and the price change history for each run. It never reads or stores customer personal information. The full policy is at karatsync.fly.dev/privacy.
Which currencies does it work in?
Whatever currency your store sells in. Rates are converted into your store currency before the formula runs, and the app refuses to write if its configured currency and your store’s currency disagree.
